When does transplanted hair grow after surgery?
The direct clinical answer
New growth from transplanted follicles typically begins between months 3 and 5. In the first 2–3 months, transplanted follicles are in telogen — the shock loss phase where existing hairs shed and the follicle rests. No new growth occurs during this period. At months 3–5, follicles re-enter anagen. Early growth hairs are fine, soft and may be barely visible in the mirror but clearly visible in photographs.

Early signs of growth — what to look for
The earliest signs of new growth at months 3–4:
- Fine, short hairs in the transplanted zone — often different in texture from mature hair initially
- Spiky short growth at the hairline — single follicle hairs emerging
- Visible filling of zones that appeared bare at month 2
- In photographs: comparing month 2 vs month 4 shows clear progress invisible to daily mirror observation
Managing the waiting period
Months 1–4 are the psychologically hardest part of the hair transplant journey. Monthly photographs provide the most important reassurance — objective evidence that the follicles are producing growth even when the mirror doesn't show it clearly. At Hairmedico, the 12-month follow-up includes monthly photograph review with direct feedback from the medical team, specifically designed to guide patients through this period with accurate, evidence-based reassurance.
