How to choose a hair transplant surgeon: credentials, surgical involvement, graft survival data and red flags. The clinical checklist every patient needs.
The 7-point surgeon selection checklist
1. Medical qualification
The surgeon must hold an MD degree and be registered as a physician with the relevant national medical authority. In Turkey, this means Turkish Medical Association registration. Request the registration number and verify it.

2. Hair restoration specialisation
General plastic surgeons, dermatologists and ENT specialists can all perform hair transplant surgery. Dedicated hair restoration specialists who have invested their career in this single speciality typically achieve more consistent results than generalists who offer hair transplant as one of many procedures.
3. International professional body membership
FUE Europe Full Member is the highest-credibility international credential in hair restoration surgery. It is verifiable via the organisation's website. It requires documentation of case numbers, peer review, and ongoing education.
4. Personal surgical involvement
Ask specifically: "Do you personally perform the extraction, channel creation and implantation โ or are any steps delegated to technicians?" This question must receive a clear, unambiguous answer. Evasive responses indicate delegation.
5. Documented case volume and outcomes
A surgeon with 4,000+ personal cases has a different level of pattern recognition and technical refinement than one with 400. Ask about case volume. Ask to see before/after cases matching your hair type and loss pattern.
6. One-patient-per-day protocol
Ask how many patients are treated per surgical day. This single question cuts through all marketing. One patient per day means the surgeon's full attention, time and skill is available for your case.
7. 12-month follow-up with direct surgeon access
Hair transplant outcomes are assessed at 12 months. A surgeon who does not offer structured 12-month follow-up with direct access to the treating surgeon is not committed to their outcomes. Follow-up managed by administrative staff or a customer service team is not equivalent.
Red flags โ walk away from these
- Promises of "unlimited grafts" or guaranteed fixed graft counts before assessment
- Unverifiable credentials or evasive answers to direct credential questions
- Significantly below-market pricing with no clear explanation
- No named surgeon on the website โ anonymous "team" branding only
- No documented before/after gallery with dateable, consistent patient outcomes
- No 12-month follow-up programme included in the package
- Pressure to book quickly โ high-quality clinics have waitlists, not pressure tactics
Common questions
What qualifications should a hair transplant surgeon have?
Look for: medical degree (MD), specialist training in hair restoration surgery, membership in FUE Europe, Turkish Ministry of Health registration (for Istanbul clinics), and a documented surgical case history with before/after photographs spanning at least 5 years.
How do I verify a hair transplant surgeon's credentials?
FUE Europe membership: verify at fue-europe.com. Turkish Ministry of Health: verify clinic registration at the รKYS registry. Trustpilot and Google reviews: verify by checking the reviewer profile ages and volume.
Should I ask the surgeon how many patients they treat per day?
Yes โ this is one of the most important questions. A surgeon operating on one patient per day has structurally different quality capacity than one operating on 4โ6 simultaneously. The answer to this question reveals the operating model more clearly than any marketing statement.
