Tüm yazılar →A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that extends beyond the boundaries of an original wound. Unlike a normal scar that remains flat and confined to the injury site, a keloid raises above the skin surface, feels firm, and may continue growing over months or years. In hair transplant surgery, keloids are the most feared long-term complication for patients of African descent.

People of African descent have a significantly higher risk of keloid formation than European or East Asian patients — estimated at 6–16% compared to 1–2% in the general population. This is not universal among Black patients, but it is common enough that it must be assessed before any surgical procedure involving skin incisions.
FUT (strip surgery) involves removing a linear strip of scalp from the donor zone and suturing the wound closed. This creates a linear scar across the back of the head — a large incision that, in a keloid-prone patient, can produce a raised, thickened scar that is both visible and uncomfortable.
FUE creates only tiny circular extraction points of 0.9–1.0mm diameter at Hairmedico. These heal as small dot scars — a fraction of the surface area of an FUT incision. In keloid-prone patients, smaller incisions mean dramatically lower risk of keloid formation.
For this reason, FUE is the strongly preferred technique for patients of African descent at Hairmedico — regardless of the graft count required.
Before any Afro hair transplant, Dr. Arslan performs a keloid risk assessment. This involves reviewing the patient's personal and family history of keloid formation, examining any existing scars on the body for keloid characteristics, and assessing skin type and tone.

Patients with a confirmed history of keloid formation require additional consideration: pre-operative intralesional corticosteroid injection protocols, modified post-operative care including silicone sheeting, and in some cases a test session (a small number of grafts placed and observed for 3 months before proceeding with a full procedure).
At Hairmedico, all Afro hair transplant patients receive a modified post-operative protocol regardless of confirmed keloid history:
