Complete hair transplant growth timeline from Day 1 to 12 months — every phase explained clinically with what patients experience at each stage.
The four biological phases of growth
Phase 1 — Trauma response (Days 0–14): Follicles experience extraction and implantation trauma. Inflammatory response. Scab formation. Most follicles enter telogen.
Phase 2 — Telogen dormancy (Weeks 2–Month 3): Shock loss. Follicles resting. No visible growth. The appearance is worse than surgery day — this is normal and expected.
Phase 3 — Anagen entry (Months 3–7): Follicles re-enter active growth. Fine hairs emerge. Density building progressively week by week.
Phase 4 — Maturation (Months 7–14): Hair calibre increases. Full texture develops. Integration with native hair. Final permanent result achieved.

Week-by-week and month-by-month reference table
| Timeline | Clinical status | Patient experience |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1–3 | Graft integration begins | Mild pain, scabs, forehead swelling |
| Day 4–10 | Scabs hardening. Grafts anchoring. | Reduced pain. Redness reducing. |
| Week 2–5 | Shock loss phase | Hair shedding — alarming but normal |
| Month 2 | Full telogen dormancy | No change visible — worst month psychologically |
| Month 3 | Anagen begins in first follicles | Fine hairs in bright light |
| Month 5 | ~50% density | Clear improvement visible to others |
| Month 7 | ~75% density | Most patients comfortable socially |
| Month 10 | ~90% density | Result essentially final |
| Month 12–14 | Full maturation | Permanent, natural, integrated result |
Why timelines vary between patients
Individual variation in growth timeline is driven by: age (younger patients often enter anagen slightly sooner), general health, nutritional status (iron, ferritin, vitamin D deficiency slows recovery), hair calibre, and surgical extent. None of these variations indicate failure — they shift the timeline by 2–6 weeks without affecting the final result quality.
