What is over-harvesting?
Over-harvesting occurs when too many follicular units are extracted, or extractions are poorly distributed, leaving visible thinning at the back and sides. The donor zone typically contains 5,000-7,000 total grafts. Safe extraction limits are 50-60% of total capacity across all lifetime sessions.
Is the damage permanent?
Yes. Once a follicular unit is removed, it is permanently gone. The scalp may partially compensate visually as remaining follicles grow, but the removed follicles do not regenerate. PRP can improve remaining follicle density but cannot restore extracted ones.
Signs of over-harvesting
- Visible patchiness at the back through short hair
- Shiny or scarred areas in the donor zone
- Uneven density when the head is shaved
- Moth-eaten appearance in the horseshoe donor area
