Asked Questions and Answers hair transplant that are dedicated to Dr. ARSLAN Musbeh, Surgeon Specialist in the Treatment of Baldness and Hair Transplant.

What is the FUE method of hair transplantation?

Hair transplanta FUE (Follicular Extraction Unit) is a surgical procedure that allows to restore hair on a bald area.

It is done by removing the grafts, the bulb one by one using a fine micro-punch (0.7 to 0.9 mm in diameter depending on the quality of the hair) directly from the donor area at the back of the head to the recipient area.

This technique makes it possible to obtain several thousand grafts of 1 to 3 hairs each, which will then be re-implanted one by one to bring maximum density to the recipient area. Thus, the bald area will regain a natural hair.

This hair transplant technique is nowadays the most effective technique to treat permanent hair loss. There is no risk of rejection because it is the patient’s own grafts and the grafts taken from the donor area are genetically coded.

How much does a hair transplant cost?

The price of a hair transplant is per medical act and not per number of grafts. An estimate will be sent to you after analysis and level of baldness.

What is the difference between FUE and DHI?

There are 2 methods of implantation in the FUE Hair Transplant Technique which means taking grafts one by one from the donor area at the back of the head. Once the grafts are removed, we move on to the implantation stage:

1- The implantation technique using tweezers. In this case, very fine incisions are made on the bald areas using a sapphire scalpel (FUE Sapphire incisions), then the grafts are placed in these incisions using tweezers.

2 – The DHI (Direct Hair Implant) technique which is a method of implantation using an implant pen. The grafts are placed in the pens and are then injected into the scalp without prior incision.

For both methods of implantation, the general method remains FUE.

How does the first online hair transplant consultation go?

All you have to do is send us a few photos of the different areas to be treated as well as the donor area (the back of the head). You will also be asked a few questions in order to determine the causes of hair loss. The photos are then analyzed by the doctor. A detailed estimate will then be sent to you.

Under what criteria is the number of grafts defined for a hair transplant?

The number of follicles to be harvested is determined according to the age of the patient, the potential evolution of his baldness, the limited or  capacity of the donor area. The result of a hair transplant with a good density therefore also depends on the capacity of this area.

What’s the difference between hair implantation and graft implantation?

The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair grafting method is a technique for removing grafts one by one from the back of the head at the crown.

The graft is defined as the bulb in which the hair grows. In each bulb, there can be 1 to 3 hairs, sometimes more.

It is therefore important to distinguish between hair reimplantation and graft reimplantation, since a graft contains between 1 and 3 hairs.

Does hair taken from the donor area grow back on the donor area?

Hair that is extracted from the donor area (back of the head) DOES NOT REPRODUCE in this area (or in very small quantities)! Each patient has a limited stock of hair that can be removed and implanted over several hair transplant sessions. It is therefore necessary for the doctor to carefully analyze the progression of the patient’s baldness in order to possibly plan other sessions in the future. He must not damage this area by taking too many grafts.

Under what type of anesthesia is the FUE hair transplant performed?

Fue hair transplant is performed under local anesthesia. You are fully conscious at all stages of the procedure which is therefore painless.  Only the first shots of anesthesia are painful, a bit like at the dentist.

How long does an FUE Hair Transplant operation last?

The duration of the Fue Hair transplant operation varies according to the bald area of each patient, the number of grafts removed and re-implanted. On average, it takes between 6 to 8 hours.

How long does it take to see the final results of a hair transplant?

The implanted hair will fall after 1 month due to the shock of moving the graft to its new location. The new hair will start to grow back from the 3rd month. The result of an FUE hair transplant is visible from the 5th month. For the final result it will be after 1 year.

After a Hair Transplant can we go to the sun, the beach and the swimming pool?

Hair transplant or beard transplant surgery can be considered all year round as long as you avoid the swimming pool for 1 month (because of the chlorine), the sea for 15 days and avoid staying too long in the sun during the healing period which is about 15 days. It is necessary to protect your head by wearing a cap or hat during this period.

Is female hair transplantation also possible?

The FUE technical hair transplant procedure is performed on both women and men.

After a hair transplant, is it still visible?

A well-done hair transplant is not detectable if the surgeon practices the right technique for the distribution of the grafts and uses the right material according to the quality of the hair. The FUE hair transplant leaves no visible trace on the final result. However, scabs and redness for about ten days after the graft will be visible.

How long does it take to get back into sports after a hair transplant?

After a hair transplant, it is possible to resume sport after 1 month. It is important to avoid any shock to the implantation area and to avoid blood pressure so as not to compromise the healing of the hair implants.

Can you drive after an FUE Hair Transplant?

After a micro FUE hair transplant, you can drive again the next day without any problems.

I’m losing more and more hair every day. When should I consider surgery?

It’s normal to lose an average of 80 hairs a day. There are events that can accentuate the number of hairs lost every day due to stress, dietary deficiencies, change of seasons etc… It is necessary to determine the cause with blood tests or to see if baldness is hereditary in the family. The doctor will then be able to tell if the loss of your hair is temporary or if it is permanent.
